Kansas City Chiefs draft wish list: David Montgomery, Iowa State, running back
By Grant Tuttle
PROSPECT STRENGTHS
Vision
Vision is the single most important part of playing the running back position. When Montgomery gets the football, it takes him very little time to determine where the weakness will be. His vision allows him to find seams and determine where his blockers are going to be. With this strength and a little bit of work, he could also develop into a good receiving back
Finishing/Falling forward
One of Montgomery’s other great traits is his ability to push forward at the end of his runs. This is incredibly important in gaining the last few extra yards at the end of a run. If you watch his tape, you will see that even without a rushing lane, he will fall forward and take a few yards more. He has good push along with his quickness, which makes him difficult to defend.
Agility
Montgomery has decent power, but I like his quickness in space against defenders. He shows the ability to make very fast cutbacks that will not cause him to lose his vertical speed. This is valuable in the open field as it makes him not only difficult to tackle, but also tough to get a good angle on him for the tackle.
FINAL ANALYSIS
The Chiefs would be wise to add another running back through the draft. Honestly, there are a lot of guys in this class that could fit in the Chiefs offense. There are few running backs I would like to see Kansas City draft in the first three rounds, but Montgomery would be one of the exceptions to that.
Despite good numbers in college, I believe that Montgomery would look even better if Iowa State would have given him competent blocking. With a little bit of NFL coaching, I think that he could develop into a very good all-purpose back. With his quickness, the Chiefs could have an excellent one-two punch with Montgomery and Damien Williams. That duo could strike fear into the heart of opposing defenses trying to defend both the passing and rushing attacks.
