FIT WITH CHIEFS

There is definitely a place on the Chiefs roster for David Montgomery. The only two running backs that are under contract for the upcoming season are Damien Williams and Darrel Williams. Last season, the team carried four running backs throughout the year. If they want to retain Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West, they could probably afford to do so. That being said, I would like to see the Chiefs add a new spark to the committee.

Montgomery, if selected by the Chiefs, would likely be a second or third round pick. Personally, I believe that the Chiefs could probably wait until the third round to even consider a running back. I am under the idea that running backs continue to matter less as time goes on. NFL offenses rely on running backs to carry a workload, but not in the same manner that they once did. That being said, Montgomery in the third round is a steal.

If he was to play in Kansas City, the Chiefs would likely use him as the first and second down back and then send Damien Williams in for third down situations. If this were the rotation, I would also expect Darrel Williams to contribute as the team’s power back at the goal line or in short yardage situations. This committee would be a stronger unit by Montgomery’s athleticism and vision. If each of these players can play in their respective roles, the offense has a chance to be even more explosive in 2019.
