The Denver Broncos have decided to go all in on their stronger side of the roster with the news that they’re hiring Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to be their new head coach.
Broncos executive John Elway was reportedly decided between Mike Munchak and Fangio to replace Vance Joseph as the team’s head coach and Fangio apparently won out after being interviewed in Chicago on Monday.
Fangio enjoyed a stellar run this last year with the Bears under head coach Matt Nagy. The Bears defense was the most feared in the NFL, and the Broncos are already quite strong on that side with a unit that’s anchored by one of the NFL’s best pass-rushing units. Both Von Miller and Bradley Chubb form a 1-2 tandem that Fangio can utilize to help the Broncos build toward respectability again, although the team will need significant help on offense, both among personnel and coaching staff.
Fangio is well-traveled as a defensive assistant or coordinator in the NFL, a streak going back to 1986 when he was first hired to coach linebackers for the New Orleans Saints. Since then, he’s been a fixture on NFL sidelines, save for a single season in 2010 when he coached at Stanford. The 60-year-old coordinator has been with the Bears since 2015 and came over after a few years with Jim Harbaugh and the San Francisco 49ers.
Fangio replaces Joseph, who lasted only two full seasons in Denver. The Broncos went 11-21 in Joseph’s tenure.
