NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Did you say a talented player is available for below-market value? Of course, the New England Patriots are going to be listed among the potential destinations. Salary cap constraints? Doesn’t matter. Roster configuration? No worries. Actual scheme fit? Not interested. The Patriots simply have to be listed in a column like this, like it or not.

Why Kareem is a fit

He’s not really.

Hunt is a fit inasmuch as Bill Belichick seems to be able to convince anyone in Hunt’s position to come and play for him, so if the Pats wanted to make room for Hunt, they can and will do so. And Hunt will likely want to at least consider playing for the most successful franchise in NFL history while Tom Brady and Belichick are still around.

That said, the Pats already have their backfield set for 2019 and beyond. Last year’s first-round pick of Sony Michel will continue to pay off for years to come after a solid rookie campaign. James White and Rex Burkhead are also signed through the 2020 season. Adding Hunt to the mix would be a serious complication—but certainly a concession you make for last year’s rushing leader.

If Hunt wants to win a Super Bowl, this makes sense. If Hunt wants to be absorbed into the ultimate team atmosphere for a season, this makes sense. If Hunt wants to re-establish his football value on the field, this does not make sense.
