Ten players who could help the Kansas City Chiefs defense in 2019
By Thomas Welte
Mario Edwards Jr, Defensive Tackle, Giants
This is a hard addition to project as we do not know if the Chiefs defense will be a 4-3 or 3-4 base defense in 2019, so I am going with a young player with versatility. Mario Edwards Jr. has been frustratingly inconsistent but has flashed legitimate talent at times.
The former Raider was picked up by the New York Giants and has been buried on the depth chart in New York. Edwards will likely hit free agency looking for a chance to prove himself and earn more money down the road. The Chiefs, who have decisions to make with their front seven, would make sense for Edwards in terms of opportunity for play time.
Despite limited playing time this year, Edwards has managed a pair of sacks, 3 tackles for loss, and 5 quarterback hits. Those are solid numbers for a rotational player and would indicate the potential for more production with an expanded role.
Allen Bailey’s contract expires at the end of this year, and while those are big shoes to fill Edwards would be an affordable option who is still young and has upside. The Chiefs will have to kick the tires on a handful of defensive linemen as they look to solve their defensive woes, and Edwards is certainly worth a long look.
