The Kansas City Chiefs were glad to see a familiar face in safety Dan Sorensen return to the line-up on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Dan Sorensen admits he was a bit nervous to step back out on the field.

The Kansas City Chiefs safety has worked hard for the last several weeks to return from a nasty injury of a broken fibula, but nothing can quite prepare a player for game reps except for the actual experience of simply getting back out there. On Sunday, Sorensen made his regular season debut for the Chiefs, in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals, and the safety was clearly excited after the game to have those first few reps behind him.

“It was a little scary at first, but I got right back in the groove,” said Sorensen after the game. “It was a blast being out there with the fans and the players with the guys making some plays. It’s just what I’ve been working for these last couple weeks so I was glad to see it happen today.”

Sorensen ended the day with 32 defensive snaps to his credit, a total of 44 percent of the available snaps he could have played. He also played 7 special teams snaps on Sunday. While the Chiefs were easing him in, it was more than the handful of snaps some fans might have expected from a player who is easing back into his role. Clearly, the Chiefs want to get Sorensen up to speed sooner than later.

As time passed, Sorensen said the mental shift became easier over time. “I was able to just focus into the game and not have to worry about my knee and how it was gonna hold up,” he said.

It will be interesting to see how the Chiefs employ their safeties at this point with Sorensen’s addition. Will he take over a starting role? How does he fit alongside newer faces who have never played with him? And what of Eric Berry’s eventual return?

Next. The Chiefs took the day off and still won. dark

For now, the Chiefs are just glad to have more talent and depth at the safety position, and Sorensen is certainly happy to be back with his teammates on the field.
