The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly going to keep Sammy Watkins out of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals to allow him to heal from a foot injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t in any mood to mess around with a potentially lingering foot injury for wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

In an effort to get him to return to full strength, Ian Rapoport says the team will keep the star wide receiver out of the line-up against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 10 in order to let his foot heal in time for next week’s showdown against the Los Angeles Rams.

Late in the game against the Cleveland Browns in Week 9, Watkins went down with a foot injury after he tried to stretch a catch into a first down. Despite the team’s win over Cleveland, the Chiefs ended up with a few injuries from that game that will test their depth and strategy moving forward.

At least in Watkins’ case, it’s clear that they aren’t too concerned about the long-term effects if he can just get some rest. Rapoport stated that it’s a precautionary measure so hopefully Watkins will be able to return after missing only one week. It should be noted that if another week off is needed, the Chiefs schedule runs into the bye week after two more games, which means Watkins could have three to four weeks off in a row if the team really wanted to give him (or anyone else) a near-month to get right for the stretch run.

Watkins signed a three-year deal with the Chiefs this offseason as the big-ticket prize that bolstered an already strong offensive unit.

Watkins has 39 catches for 515 yards and 3 touchdowns on the season.
