The Kansas City Chiefs updated reporters on Friday with word that injured safety Daniel Sorensen won’t be ready for Week 9 after all.

According to the Kansas City Chiefs, Daniel Sorensen will not be activated before their Week 9 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Sorensen was predicted to miss, at least, the first eight weeks of the regular season when he was first diagnosed with a broken fibula. The broken bone was simply going to take too long to even have surgery and heal before he could work his way back into game shape, and that’s turning out to be the reality as the Kansas City Chiefs continue to wait on their safety.

The Chiefs have one more week before they have to place Sorensen on the active roster, using a valuable space for the sake of depth on game days. For now, Sorensen is on IR. If he’s deemed not ready and it might be much longer than anyone realizes, the Chiefs could keep Sorensen on injured reserve and leave him there for the season. However, that would mean losing any possibility of seeing him play in the regular season or postseason at a position of need.

What hurts is that the Chiefs are already using up a roster spot to keep Eric Berry “day to day” each week despite having zero evidence that he’s anything but out for the long haul. Berry hasn’t even practiced in nearly three months and there are no rumors of him beginning to suit up again anytime soon.

The Chiefs have been stitching answers together on the fly at safety all season given that the team also lost Robert Golden, who wanted to walk away for unknown reasons, and Armani Watts, who is also on injured reserve. Eric Murray has also been injured at various points, meaning Ron Parker has carried the bulk of the load along with Jordan Lucas and Josh Shaw in relief.
