Landon Collins, SS, New York Giants

Why it makes sense

I’m not even going to try to hide my bias here: I think this is the move the Chiefs should make. Landon Collins is a superbly talented player who brings fire and attitude. Like Clinton-Dix, Collins is on an expiring deal but would be worth extending. Compare Landon Collins’ stats to Eric Berry’s and you will feel my excitement. I do not think Collins could replace Berry, he is not the same caliber of athlete. However, Collins could take over the strong safety role and allow Berry to play more coverage.

As Berry nears the twilight years of his career and has already dealt with a lot of injuries, a less physical role that allows him to make players in the deep center might be a good move. Landon Collins is one of the best young playmakers in the game, and if the Chiefs can acquire him they should.

What might stop the deal

If you follow me on Twitter or heard my opinion on Breeland Speaks at all, you will know that Brett Veach and I do not always see things the same way. That’s okay Brett, I forgive you. I’m not sure that the Chiefs will want to add Collins, especially if they feel the role is filled by Eric Berry. The Chiefs may also feel that they need a center field type safety more in the mold of an Earl Thomas or Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and disregard Collins.

Cost and Probability

There is a report that the Giants would move Collins for a second or third round pick. I imagine they will likely see those offers come in, and it will end up being a bit of a bidding war. I’d bet the final price paid is a 2nd round pick and a 4th or 5th next year. As of this writing, there are no substantial reports of interest from the Chiefs, but here’s hoping. I’d give this a 4 out of 10.
