Andy Reid said that safety Daniel Sorensen might actually return to practice this week, which makes him a likely bet to return to the Chiefs soon.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been a complete mess at safety for most of the 2018 regular season so far. Fortunately the pieces might be slowly coming back together for the Chiefs as the season nears the midseason point.

Daniel Sorensen was lost to a broken tibia in the preseason and it was known fairly quickly that he would miss at least a half season’s worth of work. For a player among the team’s 10 most expensive players and slated to start alongside Eric Berry, it was a pretty big loss.

From that point forward, the news at the position only got worse. Berry himself would stop practicing on August 11, which meant the loss of Sorensen was amplified all the more. Early returns from backups like Eric Murray weren’t all that positive. Ron Parker was signed to reprise his role at free safety, but the results have been hit and miss. Armani Watts was drafted to help but even he landed on the injured list.

So far the Chiefs have held up okay in spite of the issues at safety. Parker has come up big for a few key plays and Jordan Lucas has turned into an unearthed gem after coming over in an unheralded preseason trade with the Miami Dolphins. Still the Chiefs need healthy bodies—especially talented ones—at safety and Sorensen’s potential return will give them just that.

Andy Reid spoke to the media on Monday and said Sorensen would potentially return to practice this week. That’s good news because it means a return to the field will be coming shortly thereafter. Since he broke a major bone, Sorensen will need to get back into game shape for the Chiefs, but even if he’s supplying a handful of snaps here and there, it’s that many more snaps than what the Chiefs are getting now.

Sorensen had 88 tackles, 6 passes defended, 1.5 sacks and 1 interception last year in 14 starts for the Chiefs.
