Kareem Hunt, Breeland Speaks come up big for Chiefs in Week 6
By Jalon Dodson
Biggest Disappointments of the Week: Offense
As mentioned above, there were little disappointments on the offensive side of the ball. The Chiefs offense put up 40 points, making for a spectacular offensive performance. If I had to choose, though, I’d say wide receiver Sammy Watkins displayed a minimal performance in the loss against the Patriots.
Watkins had only two receptions, seemingly not making the plays we know he’s capable of. A rebound is in the foreseeable future for the young wide receiver, but for now, he’s going to need to step it up if he wants to be seen as anything other than a good receiver.
Biggest Disappointments of the Week: Defense
There were a decent amount of disappointments on the defense throughout the entire game. If you score 40 points on offense, you should win the game. That is pretty much a rule of thumb. Giving up 43 offensive points is never okay, regardless of how it happened. Chiefs outside linebacker Dee Ford didn’t contribute as much as most would have liked him to.
Ford generated some pressure on Brady but wasn’t able to stand out. His stats for the game were rather disheartening, but his performance – or lack thereof, could be due to five defensive starters being out for the Chiefs. In any case, I hope he’s able to get back on the stick and make the plays we’ve seen him make this year.

The Wrap
The loss against the Patriots was the first loss of the season for the Chiefs. While the offense showed the fire that they have shown all season, the defense performed very poorly. The box score showed it as well, as the team gave up 43 points to the Brady-led Patriots. It was rather upsetting, but the team showed promise—namely that the offense is able to keep their finger on the trigger at all times, even if there are a few backfires from time to time.
The calm and collectiveness displayed by the team offensively was something that I admired. Even though he threw 2 interceptions in the game, Mahomes came back in an impressive fashion, finishing with 4 passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He threw for 352 yards, making the game his fifth straight game of 300+ passing yards. Former Chiefs quarterback and current Redskins quarterback Alex Smith threw for 300+ passing yards in just 8 games for the Chiefs from the 2013 season to 2017 season.
Lucas had an impressive night, playing every defensive snap for the first time in his career. The next-man-up mentality was in full effect here as the team was down their 4 top safeties, forcing the team to go with Lucas. He did not disappoint. He was all over the field, and it seemed like he was almost always near the ball. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a lot more of him going forward, regardless of the injuries suffered to the secondary.
Whatever the case may be, the defense needs to make drastic changes to fix itself. I can’t see the team going far in the playoffs with a defense like the one we saw Sunday night.
