While the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football, the game still brought confidence moving forward.

The Kansas City Chiefs lost their first game of the 2018 season to the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football. While a victory would have given Kansas City a three-game lead and a tiebreaker over the Patriots, losing this game doesn’t hurt the Chiefs all that much. The Chiefs still hold a one-game lead over the Patriots and anyone else in the AFC.

While the loss hurts, it brings a great deal of confidence to me going forward if these two teams were to play again in the playoffs. We all knew that the defense was going to lose a game for Kansas City at some point this season, but it took Tom Brady and the Patriots offense until the final second of the game to get the victory.

If you’re wondering why I would feel confident after a loss like this, I would tell you to look at first Patrick Mahomes. Going into the half down 24-9 against the top dog team for many years in the toughest stadium to play in, Mahomes came back out in the second half without hesitation. Despite his two interceptions in the first half and overthrown passes, Mahomes led this offense back into the game against the most prominent opponent in the AFC.

Another reason would be looking at the injuries on the Chiefs side. Kansas City went into this game without All-Pro safety Eric Berry once again. With players like Eric Murray and Armani Watts hurt, Jordan Lucas was called upon once again. The sixth safety was playing against the Tom Brady led offense. Other injuries on the defensive side of the ball include Justin Houston and Tanoh Kpassagnon leading to rookie Breeland Speaks getting almost all of the snaps across from Dee Ford.

Then you have the offensive line injuries. We went into New England without right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. In the first half of the game, center Mitch Morse left with an injury forcing Jordan Devey to move over to the center position.

Given the number of injuries and the bounce back of this team in the second half, I feel confident facing New England again this season in the playoffs if it comes down to it. Chiefs fans should look at the bigger picture following this game as the team still holds the number one spot in the AFC as of right now.Q5
