THE BAD

Interceptions

Patrick Mahomes threw two interceptions on Sunday and neither were bad luck interceptions or the fault of his receivers.

Mahomes’ first interception came in the second quarter after the Chiefs defense had made a tremendous goalline stand. He had moved the ball from the four to the 33-yard line to flip the field position when on third-and-10, he made a bad throw. Mahomes had Tyreek Hill coming open over the middle on an in route when he threw high right into the arms of the safety.

Hill did stop on his route so the ball wasn’t as out in front as it appeared, but even if Hill had kept running it was a good three to five feet over his head. It appeared on replay that Mahomes tried to really sling the wet ball in between three defenders and it just got away from him. I will say it is a throw I want Mahomes to make every time because on a dry day I think he completes it, but the elements made it a tougher throw.

The second pick came when the game was already out of reach on a third-and-2 near midfield. The play was a bootleg rollout to Mahomes left side and instead of taking the safe dump to Demetrius Harris or trying to scramble for those two yards, he tried to stop and throw across his body to Demarcus Robinson. Robinson rather than running straight across the field faded down the field on the throw allowing room for the defender to undercut him. But Mahomes, by throwing late at an awkward angle, couldn’t put enough on the ball to get past the defender.

It was one of the worst throws of the season by Mahomes and it was one you don’t want to see him make. On the flip side, he was trying to make a play and extend a drive that would have been the dagger in the heart of the Jaguars. Mahomes was not going to go the whole season without throwing an interception and that is okay. I will take a one to seven touchdowns to interception ratio, so while these interceptions didn’t cost the team the game or really matter, they are always bad.
