Scouting the Defense

Turning our attention to the Jaguars defense, we can see it is stacked. There are playmakers at every level, and the worst part is they know it. Jacksonville plays with an attitude that most defenses in the NFL cannot, because other teams do not have the same amount of talent that this squad does.

The Jags are led by former first-round pick Jalen Ramsey, one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Ramsey and his running mate A.J. Bouye have been the cornerstones of the Jaguars secondary and through the first four weeks of the season are rated as the second-best pass defense in the NFL.

Looking at the front seven, well, there is a reason that they were nicknamed Sacksonville last season. So far though, the Jaguars are ranked 18th overall in sacks this year. After finishing with the second most sacks last season that is a huge drop-off. It isn’t because of lack of talent, since Calais Campbell, Yannick Ngakoue, Marcell Dareus, and Malik Jackson combine for one of the fiercest defensive lines in the NFL.

Add in that they have two linebackers in Myles Jack and Telvin Smith that can both run with more athletic tight ends like Travis Kelce, and you can see why the national media calls them one of the best defenses in the NFL. On top of that, the rich got richer during the draft for Jacksonville this season. They were able to draft Taven Bryan in the first round to be their rotational defensive tackle, along with Ronnie Harrison to be their third safety behind Tashaun Gipson and Barry Church.

Next. Week 5 NFL power rankings. dark

This week is going to be a huge test for the Chiefs. Kansas City has leaned on their young quarterback and their high power offense to carry them through the first quarter of the season. If any team has the talent on the defensive side of the ball to stop them it is the Jaguars. the Chiefs defense will have to be more consistent than they were against the Broncos if the Chiefs want to have a good shot at winning. If Mahomes and company can win this game they will be making a statement to the rest of the NFL that this offense has the ability to beat anyone.
