Kansas City Chiefs, Week 3 player awards: Patrick Mahomes proves his greatness
By Jalon Dodson
An outstanding performance by second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes was on full display on Monday night.
Welcome to another edition of the Kansas City Chiefs weekly player awards, where we will be focusing on various players on the rise, the MVPs of the week, and the biggest disappointments on both sides of the pigskin.
Wow. That’s pretty much all I can say at this point… wow. I’m nearly at a loss for words. The Chiefs game against the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football was, so far, the most dramatic game of the young season. Throughout the entirety of the game, the defense struggled both against the run and pass. They deserve some credit, though, as they buckled down and came through when it mattered most. Ultimately, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs offense to his second career game-winning drive, both of which have come against the Denver Broncos.
Let’s get to the awards.
Player on the Rise: Offense
I feel like this player is slowly working his way into Mahomes’ offense. Even though he has been with the team since 2013, he’s finally starting to see more and more action.
At least as of yet, wide Chris Conley is not going to blow up the stat sheet. He won’t give you very many flashy plays like the first-team All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill will, but he will provide you with consistency and plays when and where it counts. Conley had four receptions on the night, doing his best to work his way in the offense and help the Chiefs to a victory. I hope to see more out of Conley in the coming weeks.
- 4 receptions
- 13 yards
RUNNER-UPS: Demarcus Robinson (2 receptions, 31 yards); Demetrius Harris (2 receptions, 59 yards)
Player on the Rise: Defense
This rookie was not used as much throughout the past three weeks but stepped up in the Week 4 matchup against the Broncos. He may not have been used a lot on Monday night, but he did have a crucial late-game sack, coming up big for the Chiefs defense.
Armani Watts wasn’t seen as an instant starter when he was drafted by the Chiefs as a draft day 3 safety. That’s been the case thus far, but he’s definitely being worked in on defense after taking most of his snaps as a special teamer. He’d definitely be an upgrade over Chiefs safety Eric Murray, given that he can eventually develop as he’s expected to.
- 1 total tackle
- 1 sack
RUNNER-UP: Xavier Williams (2 total tackles)
