The Kansas City Chiefs may not be a perfect team but through three weeks of the NFL season they have proven themselves to be Super Bowl contenders.

On Sunday the Kansas City Chiefs improved their record to 3-0 on the young season as they defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Like their previous wins against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Pittsburgh Steelers, the win was far from perfect. The defense continues to be worrisome and the offense seemed a little out of sync at times. Despite their flaws, the Chiefs are now one of just a handful of undefeated teams in the entire NFL, and have officially proven themselves to be Super Bowl contenders this season.

I understand that some of you may scoff at hearing that. I can already predict what some of you are going to say.

“No way we can win the Super Bowl with this defense!”

“We’ve seen hot starts before, so it’s WAY too early to be talking Super Bowls!”

Look, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you shouldn’t be worried about the defense. I’m also not going to argue that I couldn’t have written a similar article last year after their hot start and we know how that season turned out. I’m not saying that I believe that the Chiefs are the favorite to win the Super Bowl, but they absolutely deserve to be in the conversation after their start to the season.

Before we talk big picture, let’s address Sunday’s game in particular for a minute. It’s easy to focus on the second half and how they were outscored by the 49ers down the stretch and were a questionable offensive pass interference call away from it being a one score game. While the second half certainly wasn’t inspiring it shouldn’t take away from what the Chiefs were able to do. In a game where the offense was a little out of sync, the play calling was extremely conservative late, and neither the defense or special teams made any big plays that really helped the offense out, the Chiefs still scored 38 points.

Think about that for a second.

A so-so day for the offense and no boosts to the offense from the defense or special teams and they scored 38 points. As I’m typing this Sunday evening the only team to score more points then that this week are the New Orleans Saints and they needed overtime against the Atlanta Falcons to do it. Last year’s Chiefs team only topped that point total twice all season long. This year’s Chiefs did it without even playing close to their best.

That’s how good this 2018 Kansas City Chiefs offense is.

That’s why they deserve to be in the conversation of Super Bowl contenders going forward.
