The Chiefs will be without two of their biggest defensive stars on Wednesday in practice as both Berry and Jones will sit.

For those waiting for Eric Berry to potentially start practicing this week, you’re going to have to wait another day. Reports are in from practice that the star safety will still sit out on Wednesday due to a sore heel that has ailed him since mid-August.

Joining Berry on the sidelines of practice will be defensive lineman Chris Jones who is also sitting out of practice on Wednesday with a groin strain. It’s unknown whether or not he suffered the injury in practice or workouts or whether it’s a lingering concern from something that happened during the team’s recent win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2.

Jones is a new addition to the injury report for the Chiefs and any possibility of him missing significant time dramatically changes the defense’s ability to control the line of scrimmage against the visiting San Francisco 49ers. Jones is an anchor up front, a Pro Bowl caliber player who remains underrated despite his clearly high ceiling of talent and charisma.

As for Berry, reports emerged this weekend that Berry could be close to returning to practice for the Chiefs. Andy Reid, the team’s head coach, said that Berry might even suit up in the next two weeks if his condition continues to improve.

Jones has started both of the Chiefs games so far and has 4 tackles on the season. If he’s unable to play, other players like Xavier Williams, Allen Bailey and Derrick Nnadi will likely be called upon to handle a much greater load on Sunday.

The Chiefs host the Niners at Arrowhead on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. C.T.
