Josh Gordon is reportedly going to be released or traded soon from the Cleveland Browns and the Chiefs are among the most favored destinations.

Former Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey announced his intention on Sunday to let wide receiver Josh Gordon leave the team he currently runs, the Cleveland Browns. Whether it’s by release or trade, Gordon was expected to be gone from the Browns roster sometime on Monday.

Soon after the smart move to announce the intention to release him, several teams were reportedly lining up to potentially trade for Gordon, depending on the price of course. Creating a bidding war was a smart move by Dorsey if he was indeed planning on moving on from Gordon.

Somehow in the midst of all of this, the Kansas City Chiefs, the franchise with the single most potent offense through two weeks in the NFL, was included in the short list of potential places who could land Gordon. It wasn’t just analysts taking random shots either. Check out this take from Oddshark:

The Philadelphia Eagles make a lot of sense. Injuries have taken their toll on a club that lacks any real go-to option right now among their receivers yet the defending Super Bowl champs are still ready to win now. They’re also close to bringing back Carson Wentz at quarterback which means they will want to accommodate him with weapons.

As for the Chiefs, it doesn’t really make much sense given other needs on the roster. The Chiefs already aren’t using Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson or Marcus Kemp to their full potential. They even let former fourth round pick Jehu Chesson go during roster cuts, and he found a new team with the Washington Redskins—rejoining Alex Smith in the process. The Chiefs also placed Byron Pringle on injured reserve, another talented option who will grow with the team’s young offense.

Despite the Chiefs offensive firepower already in house, that hasn’t stopped Vegas oddsmakers from believing the Chiefs are really in this. Perhaps there is some merit to pouring gasoline on a fire already burning bright. If the defense is more complicated to fix, the Chiefs might decide to just double down on a strength and see how far such an offense can take them.

If they did decide to go that route, it’s honestly impossible to imagine the capabilities of such a cadre of pass catchers. The team is already setting NFL records with Patrick Mahomes under center after surrounding him with wideouts like Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins as well as tight end Travis Kelce and running backs Kareem Hunt and Spencer Ware. Adding Gordon to that, a player who is certainly among the best in the business despite the amount of time he’s spent away from the field in recent years, seems almost silly.

But Gordon right now is not even making $1 million to play football. He’s a player who has always been lost in Cleveland, dealing with his own demons while playing for a club with incredibly high turnover at all levels. There’s no such thing as healthy, let alone stable, leadership in Cleveland, and perhaps the mix of talent, cost and opportunity is something Brett Veach would seriously consider.

If not, he has oddsmakers fooled. Vegas thinks it’s a real possibility.
