Eric Berry is doubttful for the Chiefs and Joey Bosa is out for the Chargers which means both teams will be making defensive shifts on Sunday.

After not practicing at all this week, Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry has officially been listed as ‘doubtful’ on the team’s final injury report. This doesn’t exactly rule him out for the game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, but it remains highly unlikely that the star safety will play.

Berry hasn’t practiced since August 11, which makes it extremely rare that a player would suit up for a game without at least a single practice or two. As for the rest of the Chiefs who showed up on the injury report, they were all full participants in practice and are expected to play.

Without Berry, it appears the Chiefs will plan to use Ron Parker and Eric Murray as their safeties against the Chargers. While this isn’t necessarily an ideal situation, the hope is that they should hold up against Philip Rivers and the Chargers impressive offense. The hope for Berry now is that he’ll be available for Week 2 when the Chiefs play the Steelers.

The Chargers received some bad news as well on Friday with word that their star defensive end Joey Bosa was listed out on the club’s final injury report. Without Bosa, fellow pass rusher Melvin Ingram will receive more focus from Bob Sutton in the Chiefs game plan. NFL Network pundit Ian Rapoport tweeted this afternoon that while Bosa’s original foot injury had healed, he suffered an injury to the same foot that was the reason for him being listed as out against the Chiefs.

This is not good news for the Chargers’ season with Bosa being listed week to week. This likely means that the Chargers will be without Bosa beyond Week 1. Aside from Bosa, defensive tackle Justin Jones was a full participant for today’s practice once more, warranting little cause for concern.
