The Los Angeles Chargers might have to get by without their best pass rusher when they host the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
The Kansas City Chiefs are marching into Los Angeles on Sunday to face the Chargers with the great potential of sitting their best overall defender in Eric Berry. News released on Thursday suggests the Chargers might be forced to do the same.
Joey Bosa has been limited in practice with a lingering foot injury throughout the preseason and Anthony Lynn admitted on Thursday that the third-year pass rusher might not be ready to play.
As much as both teams want to feature their star defenders, the reality is that playing them before either Berry or Bosa are completely ready could sideline them indefinitely by aggravating their respective injuries.
Exactly one month ago, Bosa’s foot injury was originally considered a “minor” injury and certainly wasn’t anything anyone expected to linger for as long as it has. Early tests of Bosa’s foot actually revealed nothing major which helped everyone in L.A. breathe easy after the team had already lost Jason Verrett and Hunter Henry for the year. Yet heading into Week 1, Bosa might need more time.
Even if it costs him an opening day appearance, the Chargers are better off figuring how to get Bosa and Melvin Ingram on the field together for the most amount of time. Together, since the team drafted Bosa, the pair have put up a combined 41.5 sacks in 2016-17—23 from Bosa—making them perhaps the most feared pass rushing duo in the league.
