How does this year’s Kansas City Chiefs roster compare with 2017?
By Drew Brooks
2017 quarterbacks: Alex Smith, Patrick Mahomes, Tyler Bray
2018 quarterbacks: Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne
Of course, we all know that Patrick Mahomes transitioning from backup to Alex Smith to starter is perhaps the Chiefs’ biggest roster move of 2018. After the Chiefs traded up to draft Mahomes in 2017, many fans thought Alex Smith would be playing his last season for the Chiefs. In January, the Chiefs confirmed fans’ suspicions by trading Smith to the Redskins.
Smith, in his last season with the Chiefs, put up his best numbers as a quarterback, ending the season by throwing for 4042 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions with a completion percentage of 67.5. The Chiefs now look to Patrick Mahomes to take over. Mahomes, in his one career start last year, threw for 284 yards and 1 interception last year. Mahomes has looked extremely promising so far in preseason and gives the Chiefs a lot to look forward to with his cannon of an arm.
Surprisingly, the Chiefs kept Matt McGloin and cut Chase Litton when the deadline came on Saturday. However, on Sunday, the Chiefs released Matt McGloin after they signed Chase Litton to the practice squad, which left the team with one quarterback on their 53-man roster to serve as backup to Patrick Mahomes. Chad Henne.
Henne has performed less than desirable in the past. His career record as a starter is 18-35. But, Henne is a veteran guy for Mahomes to listen to and, of course, we never hope that our team’s backup quarterback will become our starter so, fingers crossed, Henne will only have to give Mahomes advice.
Next, we’ll take a look at the guys Mahomes will be sharing the backfield with: the running backs.
