Kansas City Chiefs: 4 free agents who could help right now
By Matt Conner
Eric Decker, wide receiver
This one is going to sound weird and I have to agree with you. I’m only including this one because Brett Veach seems to want to add someone here.
To me, I’d love to see the Chiefs roll with the current wide receivers they have. Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins are stars, obviously. Chris Conley is incredibly gifted as an athlete and I think could be a real well-rounded asset for a team that made him an offensive focus. There’s also all kinds of reasons to feel warm and fuzzy about Demarcus Robinson, Jehu Chesson, Marcus Kemp, Gehrig Dieter and so on. Even down to practice squad guys, there’s some bright young talent all around.
Still Veach has already brought in Kendall Wright and Eli Rogers in separate free agent visits this offseason, and Rogers was just here several days ago. It’s clear that he believes there’s a chance to upgrade the slot receiver position, so let’s go shopping for him.
There’s not a lot on the open market these days in terms of a slot receiver, but what about a big slot guy like Decker. He’s an experienced vet who could step right in and know what it takes to move the chains, and Chiefs fans should be familiar with him from his days in Denver. Last year for the Tennessee Titans, he had 54 catches for 563 yards and 1 touchdown, and his size and experience should translate well into the middle to give Mahomes another option underneath.
It’s hard to imagine that Decker wouldn’t be cheap and short-term, so finances shouldn’t be an issue. The only real question here is why the team wouldn’t just roll with what they have and allow the kids to grow up.
