Former Chiefs GM John Dorsey has brought a familiar face with him over to the Cleveland Browns with the signing of tight end Orson Charles.

The Cleveland Browns have added another familiar face in former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Orson Charles. The team announced the move on Monday among a flurry of smaller roster moves as general manager John Dorsey continues to shape the roster as he sees fit.

Charles spent all of last season with the Chiefs, signing with them as a free agent in May and continuing to jump on and off the active roster throughout the regular season. He appeared in five total games and largely contributed on special teams, catching only 2 passes (on only 2 targets) for 53 yards. The most memorable catch came late in the season against the Dolphins when Charles came up with a totally unexpected 35-yard catch from Alex Smith.

Charles failed to hold on to a job in K.C. for another year as the team wiped the slate of all third-tier tight ends. Ross Travis was let go and Orson Charles walked and instead the Chiefs brought in a new set of competitors that include undrafted free agent Blake Mack to go with Alex Ellis, Tim Wright and Jace Amaro.

Charles now gets a new shot with his fifth NFL team since first coming into the league with the Cincinnati Bengals as their fourth round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft. He’s also spent time on the rosters of the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints.

Charles will give the Browns a tough, versatile player who excels on special teams and is always a hard worker willing to go the extra mile. He can serve as a fullback as well as a tight end as a very willing blocker who can also come up with the occasional catch (as shown above). Charles has earned a five year career for good reason, because his kind of demeanor makes a fan of many coaches.
