The Kansas City Chiefs have waived wide receiver Elijah Marks on Thursday, which opens up a roster spot for a corresponding move in the future.

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially opened up a roster spot with the announcement that they’ve released wide receiver Elijah Marks on Thursday.

Marks, a 6’1, 175 pound wideout from Norther Arizona, caught on with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent this spring after a stellar season in which he had 71 catches and 1,170 receiving yards for the Wildcats. Marks failed to get drafted but he earned plenty of post-draft interest from the Arizona Cardinals, Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers but ultimately chose to sign with the Chiefs.

Marks was first team All-Big Sky conference and second team Associated Press All-American so he should have no problem finding another chance early in training camp with another team.

As for the Chiefs, the competition at wide receiver is still difficult with so many worthy players contending for so few spots. Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, Jehu Chesson are the favorites for the first five spots. De’Anthony Thomas is also vying for a spot as he comes back from a broken leg. Other hopefuls include impressive young players who have shown up strong before like Marcus Kemp or Gehrig Dieter.

It’s uncertain what the Chiefs are opening a roster spot for at this point. So far there has not been any corresponding roster move announced for which the team needs to make room. Perhaps they knew Marks was not going to make the team even this early in training camp so they’re giving him the fastest chance as possible to latch on elsewhere. Perhaps the Chiefs are holding back on a soon-to-be announced signing.
