Running back Martayveus Carter was not taken in the supplemental draft, but it appears he’s lining up workouts including one with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs allowed the recent NFL Supplemental Draft to come and go without taking any prospects with an official draft selection. The lack of a move was a bit surprising considering how the prospects seemed to line up quite well with potential needs, and many draft analysts thought the Chiefs might make a move for cornerback Sam Beal or defensive back Adonis Alexander.

Instead, the Chiefs decided to let other teams draft those players in the name of keeping all of their 2019 NFL Draft picks in hand, a haul that includes an extra second round choice from the Marcus Peters deal. However that hasn’t kept them from checking out at least one prospect from the supplemental draft class in running back Marty Carter.

Carter is the all-time leading rusher for Grand Valley State University despite missing his upcoming senior season, for which he was declared ineligible. Carter had an incredible 36 rushing touchdowns in 36 career games for the Lakers, and set a career record with 3,728 rushing yards on 513 carries—good for an outrageous 7.2 yards/carry.

Then again, Carter’s stats might jump off the page but they are also rooted in Division II football. There’s little game tape of Carter for anyone to watch, and the 6’0, 200 lb. back also decided against any sort of personal pro day which means teams are going to have a lot of emphasis on a single visit.

Last week it was clear that Carter was going to start visiting interested teams soon enough, and the Chiefs are apparently one of the first teams to get that closer look.

The Chiefs have been down this road before with a former Grand Valley State star when they selected Brandon Carr in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Carr ended up starting every game for his first four seasons in K.C. before moving on to the Dallas Cowboys.

Carter would be an intriguing fit if the Chiefs saw something in him, but they are also already loaded at the position with the influx of Darrel Williams from LSU, Kerwynn Williams from the Arizona Cardinals and Damien Williams, formerly of the Miami Dolphins. Each will compete with Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West for final active roster spots in training camp this summer.
