Derek Carr – Oakland Raiders

While Chiefs fans may not like to admit it, the Oakland Raiders scored big when they landed a legit franchise quarterback in the second round of the 2014 draft. At 27-years-old, Carr is still an ascending playing that is just now entering his prime. Still, he has already put up some good numbers. Over the past three seasons he has averaged the following.

  • 62.5% completions
  • 3,807 yards
  • 27.3 touchdowns

Is it possible that Patrick Mahomes could hit those numbers in his rookie season? Sure, it’s possible and would be inside the parameters we talked about at the beginning of this post. However, Derek Carr has proven that is who he is. He has averaged those numbers that most fans would feel is a great rookie season for Mahomes over his past three seasons. You may like Patrick Mahomes upside over Derek Carr’s, but once again it seems WAY too “homerish” to try to justify putting Patrick Mahomes over Derek Carr in the list of best quarterbacks in the AFC West already.

Again, we aren’t talking about who you want going forward from now on. We are talking about who is the better NFL quarterback right now at this moment. If you’re being reasonable, we now have to admit that KC currently has no better than the third best quarterback in the AFC West.

Wether he is the third or fourth best depends on your opinion of this last quarterback.
