Kareem Hunt may have established himself as the Kansas City Chiefs star running back but now there is some major competition for the back up spots.

The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the most talented young running backs in the NFL in second year back Kareem Hunt. Hunt led the NFL in rushing as a rookie and as long as he stays healthy (and out of trouble), he should be the Chiefs starting running back and a featured part of the offense for years to come.

While there may be no question or competition at the starting running back spot the same can not be said for the rest of the running back depth chart. Behind Hunt, the Chiefs have four established veterans all worthy of a spot on an NFL roster and a promising undrafted free agent that shouldn’t be counted out of the equation at this point either.

There is simply no way the Chiefs are keeping six running backs (and that doesn’t even count Anthony Sherman at fullback), so between now and the start of the regular season there is going to be some serious competition for the back up running back spots.

Typically, the Chiefs will keep three running backs and a fullback on the active roster. That would mean that three guys with a legit chance to make the roster will have to be cut. If one of these backs could win the primary kick return job, then perhaps you could squeeze a fourth running back on the roster for special teams purposes, but at this point, let’s assume that the Chiefs will keep Hunt and two other running backs behind him. That sets up what could easily be the most competitive roster battle of this training camp.

So who are these other running backs that are competing for jobs with the Chiefs? Let’s take a quick look at the five guys competing for a job behind Kareem Hunt, starting with the guys we already know.
