Kansas City Chiefs sign 3 new offensive undrafted free agents
By Matt Conner
Bentley Spain
Bentley Spain has locked down the starting left tackle spot for the North Carolina Tar Heels ever since his sophomore season in Chapel Hill. He looks the part with a big frame that measures 6’5 or 6’6 and anywhere from 295-310 lb., depending on your source. He also comes with significant experience against solid competition.
The Chiefs really lack much in the way of developmental talent at this point along the offensive front, at least in terms of players locked in contractually. Cameron Erving is in his final season of his initial rookie contract. Bryan Witzmann has been a starter at left guard all last season, but he’s going to be a restricted free agent after this year now that his two-year extension is wrapping up. Parker Ehinger, last year’s starter at left guard, will be entering his contract year in 2019.
The Chiefs selected Kahlil McKenzie in the sixth round of this year’s draft in hopes of turning the former University of Tennessee defensive lineman into an offensive lineman. Other than McKenzie, the Chiefs need to select someone from a group that now includes Spain alongside Andrew Wylie, Jimmy Murray and Ryan Hunter to develop on the practice squad.
