Former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Sean McGrath has found a new home for the 2018 season with the Detroit Lions.

A familiar face for Kansas City Chiefs fans has resurfaced in Detroit as tight end Sean McGrath has signed with the Lions, the team announced on Thursday.

McGrath and his famous beard, which at one point spawned its own Twitter account, played with the Chiefs in 2013 and enjoyed his best overall season statistically that year as he played in all 16 games for the Chiefs in Andy Reid’s first year. McGrath started 9 games for the Chiefs and caught 26 passes on 40 targets for 302 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns.

Every one of those totals have remained season-high marks for McGrath, who has remained in the NFL ever since but has struggled to make such a strong on the field impression. He was actually out of football during the 2014 season after he retired before training camp began. However the following summer, McGrath returned ready to play again, this time for the Indianapolis Colts. He wouldn’t last long, however, but was claimed by the San Diego Chargers. He’s been with the Bolts ever since.

McGrath has played in 31 games for the Chargers the last two years, so it’s clear he can still play and serve as nice veteran depth, capable of blocking and catching the occasional pass.

McGrath was part of one of the most under-the-radar days of John Dorsey’s career when he plucked several contributors off of the waiver wire heading into the regular season. Along with McGrath, Dorsey claimed Marcus Cooper, Ron Parker, Jaye Howard and Dezman Moses off of waivers from other teams. Given how much they ended up contributing to the Chiefs either in 2013 or even beyond, it was quite a memorable and impressive haul for Dorsey as began his first year as GM.
