Donovan McNabb – 2000 season – Philadelphia Eagles

Donovan McNabb started six games in his rookie season in 1999 and then became the full time starter in 2000. The fact that he was Reid’s only other highly drafted quarterback and his first full season as the starter was his second season make him the easiest direct comparison for Patrick Mahomes. Now, McNabb did start more games as a rookie but I still think its the best place to start. So what kind of numbers did McNabb put up in his first full season?

330 of 569 (58%)
3,365 yards (5.9 YPA)
21 touchdowns
13 interceptions
77.8 quarterback rating

Is this a perfectly reasonable stat line for a first time starting quarterback? Yes. Do I think Chiefs fans will be happy with this stat line? No. Below 60% completions, under six yards per attempt, and only 21 touchdowns all sound like let downs considering all the hype around Patrick Mahomes right now. Those are worse numbers than Alex Smith put up in his first season in KC, let alone last season when he really excelled. So maybe that’s where we should go next. Let’s take a look at some of Alex Smith’s numbers.
