The Kansas City Chiefs are capable of big things, including a “great dynasty” if they want, according to Patrick Mahomes.

If you have high expectations for Patrick Mahomes’ tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs, you’re not the only one. The second-year quarterback believes it himself.

In a recent interview with Jenny Vrentas at Monday Morning Quarterback, Mahomes talked about a number of subjects related to his adjustment to starting for the Chiefs in year two. The entire interview is worth a read, including some great insight into his relationship with Alex Smith and throwing his first NFL interception. What’s most moving, however, might be his confidence that he and his teammates are capable of a “great dynasty” in the years to come.

Speaking to Vrentas, he said:

"Kareem Hunt and I talk about building something together here. Seeing his success as a rookie and how hard he works, I’m excited to build a future with the Chiefs. With the young nucleus we have, I feel like we can have a great dynasty coming forward."

A few things about this quote stand out

  • Mahomes is unfazed by anything at this point. You can hear it in the entire interview, and it’s true of anything else written about him (including this great story from Mahomes past).
  • What seems really special on paper (this young Chiefs offense) is understood the same way by the players themselves. They all agree they’re capable of great things.
  • The “hard work” section shows that the Chiefs have been bringing the right players in, at least on the offensive side. The ironman streak by the team’s tackles. The note on Kareem Hunt above. Tyreek Hill has been a model citizen off the field and a quick study on the field, making a transition look seamless when many track stars fail to truly become a well-rounded WR at the pro level. The entire unit is focused when it needs to be (including the charismatic Travis Kelce).

I think much of this has to do with the atmosphere created by Alex Smith as the starting quarterback and the coaching staff all around them. Mahomes has made it clear how both Andy Reid and Smith have built into him over his first full year in the pros.

Perhaps every quarterback says this, that his team is capable of being a “great dynasty” at the pro level. But the Chiefs now have a coaching staff where a postseason ticket is the norm and a new quarterback with which to dream big. The offense now has no lid, and the defense is being radically reworked to match the potential of the other side. They’re younger and faster and, hopefully, better.

Patrick Mahomes likely thinks so.
