How much will the Kansas City Chiefs draft class make?
By Matt Conner
Here’s a look at the projected contract amounts for each of the Kansas City Chiefs rookies from the 2018 NFL Draft class.
As of press time, the Kansas City Chiefs have $6.7 million in available cap space. With plenty of rookies, as in all of them, still needing to sign, we thought we’d take a closer look at the projected salaries of the Chiefs rookie class and how much will be left if the team stands pat.
Without a first round choice, the Chiefs draft class is going to be one of the most inexpensive rookie hauls in the entire NFL. Even though Patrick Mahomes is a steal at quarterback, with a four-year deal worth only $16 million (less than Alex Smith made in his final season alone in Kansas City), it’s still several times what the Chiefs top pick this season, Breeland Speaks, will make.
Speaks was taken in the middle of the second round after Chiefs general manager traded up to No. 46 overall, up 8 total spots, in order to secure the pass rusher out of Ole Miss. Even as a top 50 player, Speaks total deal will be worth just over $6 million, or $10 million less than Mahomes, taken in the Top 10. The next two rookies combined will make just over what Speaks will make in four years, too.
In other words, the Chiefs should be sitting pretty if many of these players can turn into serious contributors on defense.
Here’s a rundown of what each player is projected to count toward the 2018 salary cap and the total sum of their rookie deals as well as some insight as to how these players fit financially within the rest of their respective positions.
