The minor trade between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cleveland Browns involving role players has been cancelled due to “trade terms” as yet unknown.

For a brief second, Randall Telfer, a blocking tight end who is a tremendous, civic-minded man of character off the field, was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. For that same small amount of time, Dadi Nicolas, a pass rushing project who was injured all of last year, was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Alas, those days are gone, changed by a random mystery fog that rolled in over Thursday’s NFL transactions and made everything disappear.

Due to “trade terms,” a banner that explains nothing to us not aware of, you know, the terms of the trade, both players were returned to their teams. Now both players have also been released by their respective teams, making this whole thing a bit of an Abbott and Costello routine (everyone under 70 just Googled it).

This means the Chiefs are now potentially on the hunt once again for a blocking tight end. Telfer was not only the Browns reigning Walter Payton Man of the Year, a yearly award given by each team to the principled player who exhibits strong ties to the community, but he also came with some serious blocking chops. For those of us who miss Jason Dunn, Telfer was a nice add.

Now the Chiefs have Travis Kelce, Demetrius Harris and the numerous ghosts of Gavin Escobar, this year taking the physical forms of Tim Wright and Jace Amaro. The Escobar joke should tip you off enough to say, “Wait, lemme guess. These guys, at one time, displayed excellent hands and they’re still earning roster invites even years later from such praise.”

You would be correct.

Maybe Amaro and/or Wright still have something left in the tank. Maybe they’ll both catch a key touchdown this season and we’ll be glad for their presence. Maybe they’re not competing for that third TE spot that should go to a blocker, but rather they’ll supplant Demetrius Harris. That’s another conversation entirely.

To Telfer, we say good luck and for that brief moment, we were inspired by the player we heard you were going to be here in Kansas City.

To Nicolas, we also say good luck and hope that John Dorsey’s vision for you comes true.

To my lawyer, I need to ask if “trade terms” are enough explanation to work out some issues.
