The Kansas City Chiefs took care of some expected business just before they draft on Friday by re-signing Rakeem Nunez-Roches.

Rakeem Nunez-Roches was expected back with the Kansas City Chiefs after the team tendered him a contract offer. The restricted free agent finally signed on the dotted line just hours before the Chiefs were set to start making picks in the 2018 NFL Draft on Friday night, per Adam Caplan.

Nunez-Roches was a restricted free agent, which means he could have signed with any team and the Chiefs would have a chance to match it. However, the Chiefs tendered him a qualifying offer back in March in the hopes of bringing him back, which meant that any team signing him to a new deal would be forced to give the Chiefs a sixth round pick in return—the same pick originally used on Nunez-Roches in the first place back in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Since no team signed Nunez-Roches to a deal so far in free agency, he can just sign his tender offer and move on with the offseason.

The official re-signing of Nunez-Roches brings another rotational body back into the fold for 2018, a good move that combines with Jarvis Jenkins, Xavier Williams, Chris Jones and Allen Bailey. Together, those are five solid players to give the Chiefs a nice defensive front, although a nice draft investment would be good for competition and a bit higher ceiling overall. Plus it’s possible for a few of these players, including Bailey, to leave after this next season.

Nunez-Roches had 24 tackles in 11 starts last year and has played in 34 total games for the Chiefs over the last three seasons—not bad for a former sixth round choice.
