There’s nothing wrong with reliving a feel good moment, so let’s go back and watch the Kansas City Chiefs draft Patrick Mahomes all over again.

The Kansas City Chiefs have no first round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

The lack of a pick during Thursday night’s opening round has ruined many mock drafts in the process, as Chiefs fans have had to listen to four full months of predictions, rumors and stocks going up and down—all for naught for a team that doesn’t even select until the top 53 players are already gone.

The news that the Chiefs might even be open for trading up in the draft is what has kept many of us sane, believing that at least some fringe first rounders might be available if general manager Brett Veach swings for the fences for an impact talent. It’s possible Veach just said that, however, so that Chiefs fans would attend the team’s draft party and tune in to the draft.

Either way, despite the temporary letdown, it’s important for us to remember why the Chiefs do not have a pick in the first place. Many of these teams with first round picks would love to be in the same position as the Chiefs, without a pick but with a plan of succession at the game’s most important position.

The Chiefs traded Alex Smith earlier this offseason, finalizing the passing of the torch from an excellent five-year stint under veteran Alex Smith to Patrick Mahomes II. Mahomes was able to sit on the bench for a full year learning from Smith and Andy Reid and his staff and the Chiefs have surrounded him with everything he needs to succeed.

For those who need a boost before a draft without a pick, let’s get goosebumps all over again while watching the Chiefs select a first round quarterback for the first time since ’83.
