Will Hernandez OG, UTEP

Will Hernandez is one of the top guards in this year’s draft class. After being a red shirt freshman in 2013 Hernandez became the best lineman at UTEP. Starting 49 straight games from 2014-2017 Hernandez is everything that you could possibly want in an offensive lineman. Not only is he very good at his job he is MEAN on the field. Hernandez’s nasty attitude is something that the Chiefs have lacked up front for quite a long time.

While Hernandez did not wow anyone at the combine, he did show that he had some decent athleticism. He also showed that the tape was not lying about his upper body strength, he topped all offensive linemen in the draft with 37 reps on the bench press.

I know a lot of people would hate to see something like this happen. Normally an offensive guard this late in the first round would not be that big of a deal. When you must trade other assets for him though, the story becomes a bit different. The thing is Will Hernandez, or any other top guard in the draft for that matter, could be the final piece the Chiefs need to have possibly the league’s top offense this season. Add in the fact that you can never go against giving your young quarterback more protection and you have the recipe for a scenario like this to happen.

With the NFL draft only, a few days away we will finally know who Brett Veach has coveted throughout this entire process. Veach said in his recent press conference that “all cards are on the table “when asked about trading up into the first round. It seems more and more likely that the Chiefs may make a pick this upcoming Thursday, so make sure you tune in!
