The Kansas City Chiefs have added another veteran to compete at tight end this offseason with the addition of Tim Wright.

Veteran tight end Tim Wright has found another opportunity to compete for a roster spot in the NFL with news that the Kansas City Chiefs have offered him a spot on their offseason roster. It’s his first time on a roster since just before the 2017 regular season started.

Wright has bounced around between several franchises since he first entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. Wright surprised pretty much everyone by appearing in all 16 games that year, even starting 8 of them for Tampa Bay, and ended up with very respectable, even exciting, totals of 54 receptions, 571 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns.

Just before the next season, Wright was part of the Logan Mankins trade between the New England Patriots and Bucs that sent a draft pick and Wright to Bill Belichick’s team. Wright set a career high in touchdowns in New England—of course—that season with 6, but he only had 33 targets all year, which meant dipped totals on the year of 26 receptions and 259 yards. He was released by the Pats the next summer.

Since his time with the Patriots, he signed with the Buccaneers once again and then was traded to the Detroit Lions where he was injured for the entire 2016 season and then released just last offseason. Now he’s with the Chiefs.

For the Chiefs, they now have Wright and Jace Amaro likely competing for one of the back-up tight end spots to go with Orson Charles, who came on strong last year after making the roster from the practice squad, and Demetrius Harris. It also wouldn’t surprise anyone to see the Chiefs also draft another option for competition behind Travis Kelce .
