The Kansas City Chiefs spent some time with a late round flyer at quarterback in the form of Florida International’s Alex McGough on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been slowly constructing the depth chart at quarterback throughout the offseason and recently brought the total on the roster to three with the additions of free agent veterans Chad Henne and Matt McGloin.

Brett Veach is still likely to add a young quarterback via the draft if the value and timing both make sense, which is likely why they’re meeting with late round potential prospects like Alex McGough from Florida International University.

Last season, McGough enjoyed his finest year to date after four years starting for the Panthers. It was also his first year under Butch Davis, who was the team’s new head coach in 2017. Last year he completed 232 of his 355 passing attempts (65.4% completion rate) for 2,798 passing yards. He threw 17 touchdowns along with 8 interceptions and has career totals of 65 and 37 in the respective categories.

The Chiefs are likely to continue to get to know the late round options at quarterback to add a developmental arm to the group as they head to OTAs and training camp. Last year, Joel Stave was the developmental option even with Mahomes also on the roster. Now that the Texas Tech product has ascended to the role of starter, it makes even more sense to add an arm with an unknown ceiling in the hopes that the coaching staff can help nurture such a young player.
