The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a journeyman defensive tackle in Stefan Charles in the hopes of striking gold this offseason.

If you missed the initial transaction, no one would blame you.

The Kansas City Chiefs first signed defensive tackle Stefan Charles in the week leading up to the team’s first and unfortunately only postseason game this year against the Tennessee Titans. At the same time they placed cornerback Phillip Gaines on injured reserve, the Chiefs added the journeyman to the roster to get a closer look at his potential.

It turns out they must have liked what he brought to the team enough, because John Kryk of the Toronto Sun is reporting that Charles has returned to the Chiefs on a new one-year deal.

Charles played a few seasons for the Buffalo Bills through the 2015 season before joining the Detroit Lions for 12 games for 2016. After a stint with the Jags, he’s now hoping the Chiefs will give him a chance to catch on.

Ever since free agency began, the Chiefs have reportedly been looking for help along the defensive line. They were listed among the teams interested in Star Lotulelei, who ended up signing with the Buffalo Bills. On Sunday they visited with Xavier Williams of the Arizona Cardinals, who is a restricted free agent. Charles at least adds another body along the line to compete for an active roster spot as they continue to bolster the trenches.

At this point, Allen Bailey, Chris Jones and Jarvis Jenkins are the three primary players for the Chiefs along the defensive front. Bennie Logan remains a free agent, as does Rakeem Nunez-Roches. Other hopefuls joining Charles include Josh Augusta, Mike Purcell, Justin Hamilton and T.Y. McGill.
