Sean Smith will be released by Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders are reportedly set to release cornerback Sean Smith after a disappointing couple seasons in the Bay Area.
Sean Smith is once again set to be a free agent, at least if rumors from Bill Williamson are correct that the Oakland Raiders have decided to release the veteran cornerback.
When Smith first inked a four-year contract with the Raiders for a whopping $38 million, it was enough to stave off every other suitor in the team’s hopes to remedy their pass defense. Smith was entering the free agent market as an above average physical corner who had fared well as the top outside pass defender for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Unfortunately, Smith never quite worked out as expected in Oakland, along with a myriad of other acquisitions that continue to plague the Raiders even today. Smith was benched early in his Raiders career and failed to lock down a cornerback position that has since been given to last year’s first round rookie, Gareon Conley.
In two seasons with Oakland, Smith had 4 total interceptions and 15 passes defended, but the boxscore doesn’t tell the full, largely disappointing story.
Update: For those wondering if Smith is going to be available for teams such as the Chiefs to bolster the secondary, apparently Smith is going to serve the next year in jail after pleading guilty to a felony assault charge. While teams likely would have been interested in bringing him in to see what was left in the tank at the age of 31, instead he will be out of the league entirely. It’s also likely that Sean Smith’s professional football career is now over.
