Tennessee Titans release Matt Cassel

Former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel was released by the Tennessee Titans on Friday after two years with the team.
Matt Cassel will be in search of a new team for the sixth time in his professional career this offseason after being released on Friday by the Tennessee Titans. He’s served as the team’s back-up quarterback for each of the last two seasons behind Marcus Mariota.
Cassel has made two starts in his tenure with the Titans, going 1-1 in relief of Mariota, throwing 3 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He will be turning 36-years-old this May, and given another draft class of prospects, it will be interesting to see if Cassel can find a home. Recycling back-up quarterbacks always seem to land with a team, but Cassel has put in 14 years already in the NFL.
Chiefs fans will know Cassel well from his four years with the team where he was the primary starter under head coach Todd Haley with a 19-28 record.
What’s interesting about this offseason is that the Chiefs themselves are going to be searching for two new quarterbacks if they fail to bring back Tyler Bray, the longtime third string quarterback, after also trading five-year starter Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins in January. Patrick Mahomes is now entrenched as the first year starter, giving the Chiefs room to bring in a veteran and a rookie to back up Mahomes on the depth chart.
That said, it’s hard to imagine that the team would be okay with Cassel back at quarterback under this new regime. Other options like Chase Daniel make much more sense knowing the offense that Andy Reid runs.
