Chicago Bears release former Chiefs safety Quintin Demps

The Chicago Bears dropped Quintin Demps just one season after signing him to a multi-year deal in free agency.

For those interested in what happens to a familiar face, the Chicago Bears have officially released former Kansas City Chiefs safety Quintin Demps just one year after signing him to a three-year contract in free agency.

Last spring, the Bears actually signed two former Chiefs players in an attempt to bolster the secondary with defensive players on the open market. They signed Demps and Marcus Cooper to be two of four starters in the team’s base pass defense, but both players struggled to stay on the field. For Demps, it was an unfortunate broken forearm in Week 3 that led the Bears to place him on injured reserve, ending his regular season after just a couple games.

Demps faces an interesting quandary, because just one year ago, he was healthy enough to command a multi-year deal after setting a career high with 6 inteceptions for the Houston Texans. One year later, he’s coming off of a season ending injury and will turn 33-years-old in June. It’s unlikely he will once again earn a multi-year offer, so some team could enjoy a nice bounce back candidate who has plenty of experience.

Demp played for the Chiefs in 2013 as one of John Dorsey’s first of several reclamation projects at the position. Over the years, Dorsey was always able to find value at safety on the cheap, including Demps, Tyvon Branch, Kelcie McCray, Dan Sorensen, Ron Parker and Husain Abdullah. Demps played in all 16 games for the Chiefs that year and had 4 interceptions and 10 passes defended.
