Slot receivers who could potentially replace Albert Wilson for the Chiefs
Taylor Gabriel
Another wide receiver looking for a specific role in order to have success is Taylor Gabriel. The undrafted free agent was signed by the Cleveland Browns in 2014 where he played his first two seasons. In 2016, Gabriel was signed by the Atlanta Falcons and became an instant weapon for quarterback Matt Ryan. His 579 yards and 6 touchdowns through the air contributed to Ryan’s MVP race and the teams Super Bowl LI birth.
Gabriel, while not a household name, was a big enough weapon to draw attention away from receivers Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu. His elite speed makes him a good deep threat as well as effective on screen plays, both of which would fit in Andy Reid’s offense.
The entire Falcons offense took a step back in 2017 including Gabriel, which could make him a cheaper signing in free agency. The finger could be pointed at the new offensive coordinator in Atlanta after Kyle Shanahan left to become the 49ers head coach. Maybe a change of scenery would be good for Gabriel. Coming to an offense that, like Shanahan’s, feeds on matchups and designed plays, Gabriel could have great success.
With the pending free agency of wide receiver DeAnthony Thomas, the Chiefs could use another gadget type player that can do a little bit of everything. His playmaking abilities in open space make him a great match for head coach Andy Reid’s West Coast offense.
