Kansas City named finalist to host NFL Draft in 2019 or 2020
By Matt Conner
Kansas City put in a bid to host the NFL Draft in recent months and it looked like the bid was successful, at least to become a finalist in future years.
The NFL Draft continues to become a surprising spectacle of greater and greater proportions with each and every offseason. What began as an event that was half-heartedly televised to its current three-day extravaganza, the annual draft has become a serious boom for business and it’s only becoming even more so with each passing year.
In recent years, the draft has become a roving exhibit of sorts, moving from its longtime home in New York City to various NFL cities who have volunteered to host the event. The end result is accessibility in various regions, a new traveling event for NFL fans and families to enjoy and an even greater amount of attention on this single weekend in the spring.
The NFL Draft first moved to Chicago for two years on a trial run to great effect. The Windy City provided an ideal backdrop for the league, and Philadelphia soon followed suit, showing itself to also be a great host for the draft. Other cities began to put their own applications in to host the draft and Kansas City was announced today as “1 of 5 finalists” for either 2019 or 2020.
A representative group from Kansas City has been chasing this dream for some time, but they were considered “longshots” to host it as recently as 2018. However, it’s clear the league liked the city’s pitch enough to consider it strongly because they’re potentially up “next” after Philly hosts it one more.
It’s unclear when an official announcement could be made, but perhaps it will be close or during this year’ draft festivities.
