Derrick Johnson’s most memorable moments with the Kansas City Chiefs
Two Pick 6s
The 2009 season was a very difficult one for Johnson. Under then-first year head coach Todd Haley, Johnson was not living up to Haley’s standards. Johnson was known for being in Haley’s “doghouse,” starting in only three games that year.
Heading into Week 17, the Chiefs had only three wins and were facing a five-game losing streak. But they ended the season on a high note against a Denver Broncos team that needed to win in order to make the playoffs.
Running back Jamaal Charles ran through the Broncos’ defense with ease. To be exact, he rushed for 256 yards and a pair of touchdowns. But Johnson decided to add on to the dominance, making it a pair of Texas Longhorns having a monster game.
Johnson intercepted quarterback Kyle Orton twice with both of them going back for touchdowns. Johnson’s first interception of the game came in the third quarter, intercepting a pass in coverage. With the help of his defensive teammates paving the way, Johnson ran 45 yards for a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Johnson, hiding behind his defensive line, jumped up and snagged Orton’s pass. With no Broncos players in his way, Johnson ran 60 yards to the end zone and became the 25th player in NFL history with a pair of pick-sixes, according to the CBS broadcast from the game.
The Chiefs defeated the Broncos 44-24. The win also eliminated the Broncos from playoff contention.
