Derrick Johnson’s most memorable moments with the Kansas City Chiefs
2014 Pro Bowl
This may be one of the more interesting moments in Johnson’s career, as well as Chiefs history.
The NFL decided to try something different with the Pro Bowl for a couple of years. Rather than the traditional AFC vs. NFC conference match, the league decided to have fans vote for Pro Bowl players, followed by a draft by Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Barry Sanders in 2014. This meant that players on the same team would be going head-to-head in the Pro Bowl if they were drafted to different teams.
Johnson was drafted to Team Rice, along with quarterback Alex Smith, outside linebacker Justin Houston, cornerback Brandon Flowers and return specialist Dexter McCluster. Team Sanders drafted running back Jamaal Charles, offensive tackle Branden Albert, nose tackle Dontari Poe, outside linebacker Tamba Hali and safety Eric Berry.
Late in the first quarter, Charles receives a handoff from Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. Charles ran up the middle, only to be met by Johnson, who drilled Charles for no gain.
It was probably assumed by some that the hard hits would not occur, given the new format of the Pro Bowl. But Johnson treated this like a regular season game, regardless of who had the football.
Johnson went on to become the defensive Pro Bowl MVP after helping Team Rice win 22-21. The Chiefs co-led the league with 10 Pro Bowlers that year along with the 49ers.
