Today is the first day that Canadian Football League players without an active 2018 contract can sign with NFL teams. Here are a few who could interest the Chiefs.

Let’s be clear from the outset: all of the players listed here are longshots.

Longshots deserve coverage, however, and just like any good front office won’t rest until they’ve turned over every rock looking for potential talent, we’re also keen to look in every direction to see where the Kansas City Chiefs might find a player of interest.

For those paying closer attention than most, Tuesday is an important day on the calendar for general managers. It’s the start of a new league year in the Canadian Football League, which means that numerous players will become free agents and contracts slated for 2018 will officially kick in at noon (ET). It’s akin to the NFL’s first day of the new league year, which comes on March 14 this offseason.

What this means is that any NFL team who has been scouting a breakout player from the CFL is now able to officially sign that player if they can reach an agreement. Over the years, the Chiefs have shown an interesting relationship with CFL:

  • They kept Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from ever playing for his country’s own football league by drafting him in the sixth round (and keeping him around).
  • They have signed a couple CFL players in recent years in hopes of striking gold, including wide receiver Weston Dressler and linebacker Cory Greenwood.
  • Former Chiefs WR Joe Horn played a year in the CFL before signing with K.C.
  • Former Chiefs have gone on to nice careers in the CFL including defensive back Maurice Leggett, kicker Justin Medlock and, quarterback Casey Printers.
  • Most recently, Javier Arenas played for Ottawa last season.

Sometimes a team is able to unearth a true diamond a la Cameron Wake or even a regular contributor like Brandon Browner or Andrew Hawkins. In the hopes of such a find, we present to you a few players that the Chiefs might like enough to bring on board, even if it’s just a on reserve/futures deal that will allow them to check out the player even further.
