Rumors are churning that Josh McDaniels might not take the job in Indianapolis after all, and Dave Toub’s name has surfaced as a potential replacement.

The Kansas City Chiefs might have more of a coaching staff shake-up than expected if current rumors prove true that Josh McDaniels, currently the offensive coordinator for the Super Bowl losing New England Patriots, might back out of the rumored commitment he had to take over the Indianapolis Colts after the season. That’s because Dave Toub’s name has surfaced as a potential replacement.

For weeks now, McDaniels has been mentioned in conjunction with the Colts head coach opening, almost immediately after Chuck Pagano was relieved from the role after six years on the sidelines for Jim Irsay’s team. General manager Chris Ballard interviewed several persons, but he landed on McDaniels and introduced him to Irsay to have him sign off.

In the last week, McDaniels had further talks with the Colts leadership but it was all a formality, at least reportedly, to discuss the transition of leadership and how things would work out after the Super Bowl. Yet Adam Caplan has news that this might not be the done deal that everyone pictured.

What’s interesting here is that Toub’s name is surfacing despite never having interviewed for the role. The Colts even interviewed former Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, but the Chicago Bears struck a deal early with him—and Nagy reportedly liked the idea of coaching Mitchell Trubisky anyway. But Toub was never even given an interview, so the idea of the Colts suddenly jumping to the Chiefs special teams coach seems an odd rumor, to be certain.

Toub made sense on paper from the beginning, but what makes more sense is that the Colts give McDaniels time to make up his mind and recover from the startling loss in the Super Bowl or they simply move on to other candidates they interviewed in the process. That’s a list that includes Baylor head coach Matt Rhule and Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard.
