Alex Smith might have not always felt beloved by fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, but they certainly let him know he was appreciated with donations to his charity in recent days.

When the Kansas City Chiefs traded Alex Smith earlier this week to the Washington Redskins for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third round choice in the 2018 NFL Draft, it was a bittersweet moment for Chiefs Kingdom.

On the one hand, the timing seemed perfect given the investment in Patrick Mahomes and the fact that Smith was entering the last year of his contract. He was coming off of a career year, and it wasn’t surprising to see teams lined up to trade for him. On the other hand, it’s hard to watch a quarterback who has given so much of himself on and off the field to the Kansas City community walk away. He is, after all, the best quarterback of a generation to play for the red and gold.

Those memories of turning around the team’s fortunes over these last five years will not go away anytime soon, which is why fans responded en masse to donate to the Alex Smith Foundation. Specifically, the charitable organization works with foster children, especially teens, to help provide advocacy and support to a very underserved population.

We knew here at Arrowhead Addict that many fans were making donations given that many of you were tweeting at us saying as much, but we were bowled over by the totals broadcast by Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, earlier on Friday.

These totals represent the level of respect Chiefs Kingdom has for Smith. It’s a beautiful gesture to provide some support for those who need it most in the name of a quarterback who will be dearly missed.
