Kansas City Chiefs fans are still celebrating the trade involving quarterback Alex Smith while some Washington fans are starting to come around.

There’s not really a question that the Kansas City Chiefs got the better end of the deal when general manager Brett Veach made a blockbuster deal trading away quarterback Alex Smith for a third-round pick and young talented cornerback in Kendall Fuller. Chiefs fans are still fired up days later as they come to the realization that it is time for the Patrick Mahomes era. On top of their young quarterback getting the start in 2018, they hauled in great pieces when trading their former starter.

Smith will go to Washington and be in a similar situation as when he came to Kansas City in helping get a team back to the playoffs. The Redskins have most of the defense figured out with a couple minor holes and just need to add weapons on the offensive side of the ball. This is exactly what he walked into Kansas City with but this time is getting a major payday.

Washington fans were not nearly as optimistic when hearing about the trading of Fuller. Fans are beside themselves when looking at the deal their beloved team gave Kansas City. The young cornerback had a breakout year in 2017, his second year in the NFL, and even was rated one of the Pro Football Focus websites top cornerbacks of the year. Fans were not planning to give up such a young prospering star for Smith.

While some fans are still displeased with the trade, others are starting to come around to the idea of having a quarterback locked down for longer than a year. Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins has been franchise tagged the last two seasons. Having Smith locked down gives them some stability and an opportunity to focus on other positions. Smith was given the third biggest guaranteed contract in the history of the NFL, but it is still a lower price than paying Cousins to come back.

Alex Smith came to Kansas City in a time of need and helped get the franchise back on its feet after a slump over a few years before. Most of Chiefs Kingdom is ready to move on to the shiny new toy that they’ve waited decades for but still appreciate everything Alex did for the franchise in his five years here. We all wish Smith great luck in Washington.
